Andrea Bowen People Guide Will Susan Mayer soon be moving away from Wisteria Lane into a TV show all of her own? She might, if new rumors are to be believed.
"Rumor continues to run out of control on the Desperate Housewives front," gossip columnist Liz Smith wrote in the New York Post. She cited unnamed sources who claimed that ABC intends to launch a Desperate Housewives spin-off in two years' time, to be headed by Teri Hatcher (Susan Mayer), and presumably also featuring Andrea Bowen (Julie Mayer).
According to the paper, ABC wants to try to convince Hatcher to move away from the security of her DH gig by offering her a big pay rise if she were to accept the offer. Supposedly, Hatcher refused to give the network an immediate answer, and is still thinking over the offer. However, the paper speculated that this was just a tactic employed by Hatcher to keep the peace on the set, as the other Housewives might not take too kindly to learning Hatcher would be betting her own show.
This is the second time rumors have appeared of a Desperate Housewives spin-off. In early February, creator Marc Cherry revealed that ABC "has saved an area [on the schedule] for me when I'm ready to write it," but added that this wasn't going to happen anytime soon. "It's going to take me a couple of seasons before I have the energy [and] time."
In last Thursday's USA Today article on Desperate Housewives, Cherry repeated that there won't be a DH spin-off for several years, and also warned that audience interest might cool down so much there wouldn't even be a need for one. "Next season, there'll be some other hit show, and people's attention will drift over to it."
