Eva Longoria People Guide On-screen couple Ricardo Antonio Chavira (Carlos Solis) and Eva Longoria (Gabrielle Solis) spoke recently about the matters close to their heart that they support when not at work on Desperate Housewives.
For Longoria, politics is her passion. "I was extremely politically active last year and I will be more politically active, still," she told Vista, a magazine for Hispanics. "I'm involved with an organization called MALDEF — Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. They fight for Latino rights, a lot of farm-worker rights. Actually, I'm going out to work one day in the field with the United Farm Workers, for a documentary. Hopefully they can use it. I'm doing it for PBS. A day in the field, and it's going to be so backbreaking."
Chavira meanwhile has been made Honorary Chairperson for the 2005 San Antonio Komen Race for the Cure. It's a charity dedicated to curing breast cancer – a cause close to Chavira's heart after his mother died from it in 1987, when he was just 15. "My goal is to create awareness in the Latino community, many men because of machismo prevent women from taking care of themselves. It's time for Mexican men to change and respect women's independence."

Meanwhile The Insider has posted an article and accompanying video interview of Chavira, as he walks a reporter around the neighborhood where he grew up. In the interview, he speaks further about his support for the cancer charity. "I just felt that, given my new-found celebrity status, why not use it in a good way, in a way that would give ... some sort of positive reinforcement in the community on behalf of the memory of my mother?"
