By Christian January 8, 2006 - 10:03 PMCable network Bravo will soon be jumping on the Desperate Housewives bandwagon by producing its own program about five women living in an upscale community -- only this time, the program won't be fictional.
Called The Real Housewives of Orange County, the docu-drama will revolve around four women who have been living in a gated community in California for several years, and who have recently been joined by a fifth woman who just moved into the neighbourhood. The women featured include a former Playboy model and a "self-made" insurance broker.
"Bravo continues to innovate in the reality TV genre with this riveting series exploring the complicated daily lives of five privileged women and their families," Bravo president Lauren Zalaznick told Zap2It. "From Peyton Place to Desperate Housewives, viewers have been riveted by the fictionalized versions of such lifestyles on television. Now, here is a series that depicts real-life 'desperate' housewives with an authentic look at their compelling day-to-day drama."
Launching documentary-based programs that are a knock-off of fictional hits has become something of a trend of late. MTV had great success with its program Laguna Beach, following a group of high school students in a setting similar to the Fox show The O.C.
