It is still the most successful show on US television in most measurable ways, but as Desperate Housewives began its November sweeps episodes it showed yet another decline in ratings.
According to figures released by MediaWeek, "I Wish I Could Forget You" scored a 16.8 rating with a 23 share. These figures mean that of all households in the United States with television sets, 16.8% were tuned into DH, as well as 23% of those households actually watching television on Sunday at 9:00pm. The show pulled a 10.3/23 rating in the coveted 18–49 demographic.
Here are this week's Desperate Housewives ratings in context:
With 24.35 million viewers, it was down again in total viewers—off by half a million compared to two weeks ago—while Desperate Housewives lead-out Grey's Anatomy had another stellar performance with a 13.2/20 rating, 18.96 million viewers and 8.5/20 in the 18–49 demographic. This means Grey's Anatomy was up by half a million viewers on two weeks ago. Grey's Anatomy continues to fight its away out of Desperate Housewives' shadow, with a 30% gap in total viewers at the beginning of the season now down to around 22%.
Desperate Housewives was up against the end 15 minutes of CBS's Cold Case, which received a 11.6/16 rating, and the first 45 minutes of Category 7: The End of the World, which managed 9.2/14. Following behind were NBC with a two hour special of Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Fox with a combination of Family Guy and American Dad and the WB with a rerun of Supernatural.
ABC's won the night, beating CBS by 3.12 million viewers, and its 7.6/18 18–49 score beat CBS's 4.5/1.
In related news, Desperate Housewives has proved to be a massive hit with "upscale" viewers—those that have homes worth more than $100k. In the first five weeks of the new TV season, Desperate Housewives was the top rated program with upscale viewers in both the 18–49 and he 25–54 demographics. It was followed by Lost and Grey's Anatomy, firmly seating ABC as the winner.
