By Antony March 7, 2006 - 5:46 PMDisney's Buena Vista Television, owner of ABC, has started to offer the re-run rights of Desperate Housewives to cable networks. But the winning network had better have deep pockets, as Desperate Housewives reportedly has a $1.2 million per-episode asking price.
According to Broadcasting & Cable, Buena Vista Television is pitching it to the cable networks for a 2008 start. "Industry executives" said that the show is being offered to Turner Broadcasting, A&E, E!, Oxygen and WE, Lifetime Television and ABC Family.
However whether they'll get the $1.2 million asking price is another thing. The articled noted that serialized shows tend don't tend to do as well in re-runs, and that 24 sold for only $250,000 to A&E. ABC's Alias, another heavily-serialized drama, went for only $200,000 an episode to TNT back in 2004. In contrast, the episodic CSI: Crime Scene Investigation went for $1.6 million per episode to Spike TV in 2002.
A Buena Vista TV spokesperson said they wouldn't comment on "past or present" negotiations, but did say "we are currently in the marketplace with Desperate Housewives and it has been very well received."
