By Antony July 6, 2006 - 6:18 PMHousewives Cast Shunned At the Emmys
None of the leading ladies get a nomination; Alfre Woodard nominated; ABC's total nominations up.
What a difference a year makes. Just last year Housewives had three actresses vying for the Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series Emmy award. This year it has none. Housewives was shunned in the key categories by the 2006 Emmys, possibly due to a new nomination process, but did still pick up a number of nominations. ABC's total nominations also went up.
The 2006 nominations were announced today, and according to details at Emmy website Housewives received seven nominations—down from last year's 15.
Housewives is nominated in the following two categories for the first time:
- Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series — despite her character being critically attacked over the course of season two, Alfre Woodard is the highest profile nomination for Housewives this year. She is up against Curb Your Enthusiasm's Cheryl Hines, My Name Is Earl's Jaime Pressly, Weeds' Elizabeth Perkins Will & Grace's Megan Mullally. This award was won last year by Everybody Loves Raymond's Doris Roberts.
- Outstanding Hairstyling For A Series — key hairstylists Dena Green and Gabor Heiligenberg and hairstylists Stefano Ceccarelli and Gaetano Panico represent Housewives for the first time in this category. They are up against Alias, Rome, Six Feet Under and Will & Grace. This award was won last year by Deadwood hairstylists.
Housewives is defending its title in the following categories:
- Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series — Shirley Knight is nominated for her one-episode guest appearance as Phyllis Van de Kamp. She is up against Extras' Kate Winslet, Malcolm In The Middle's Cloris Leachman, Monk's Laurie Metcalf and Will & Grace's Blythe Danner. It is Leachman's fifth nomination and she has yet to win, and Danner's last chance to win an award for Will & Grace. Last year the award was won by Lupe Ontiveros (Juanita Solis) for Housewives. Kathryn Joosten (Mrs. McClusky) was also nominated.
- Outstanding Casting For A Comedy Series — Scott Genkingre and Junie Lowrie Johnson are nominated for the casting of Desperate Housewives, up against Entourage (which is nominated twice), My Name Is Earl and Weeds. They won last year, and beat off competition that included Arrested Development and Entourage.
- Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Comedy Series — Nancy Morrison represents Housewives this year in this category, for her work on "That's Good, That's Bad". She is up against her counterparts from Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Office (which is nominated twice) and Weeds. Michael Berenbaum won last year for his editing of "Pilot", while Jonathan Posell was nominated for editing "Pretty Little Picture".
Housewives has a second chance to grab an award in the following categories:
- Outstanding Costumes For A Series — costume designer Catherine Adair and costume supervisors Karo Vartanian and Joyce Goodwin are competing against Battlestar Galactica, Everybody Hates Chris, Rome and The Sopranos. They were nominated last year, but lost out to Deadwood.
- Outstanding Art Direction For A Single-Camera Series — production designer Thomas Walsh, art director P. Erik Carlson and set decorator Erica Rogalla are nominated for their work on "There's Something About A War". They are competing against House, Nip/Tuck, Rome and Six Feet Under. They were up last year too, but lost out to Deadwood.
But these are the categories where Housewives has been shunned:
- Outstanding Comedy Series — Housewives was nominated in this category last year but lost out to the departing Everybody Loves Raymond.
- Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series — Housewives was nominated for "Pilot" written by Marc Cherry but lost out to Arrested Development.
- Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series — probably the biggest shocker, going from three nominations to none this year. Last year Marcia Cross (Bree Van De Kamp), Teri Hatcher (Susan Mayer) and Felicity Huffman (Lynette Scavo) were all vying for this award. The award was taken home by Huffman.
- Outstanding Directing For A Comedy Series — Charles McDougall won an award for directing "Pilot.
- Outstanding Main Title Design — Garson Yu and Yolanda Santosa were nominated for their creation of the Desperate Housewives credits but lost out to Huff.
- Outstanding Main Title Theme Music — Composer Danny Elfman won this award for the theme music of Housewives.
While Housewives's inability to pick up any nominations in some of the top categories will probably be seen sa a failure by many, the nomination process was changed this year (story) "with the aim of giving more shows and more actors the opportunity to be nominated and win." This year "the Academy asked voters to hand in a list of 10 best shows instead of five, as in past years. It will then have a special committee rank the shows to determine the five nominees."
Overall ABC got 63 nominations, up from 51 last year. HBO was once again the leader with 95 nominations, up from its 93 nominations last year.
