Many actors dread auditioning for a new role. But for Mark Moses, having worked with creator Desperate Housewives Marc Cherry three times before, reading for the role of Paul Young was a more enjoyable experience.
"The audition process is never truly a painless one, but with Desperate Housewives it was made less [painful] because Marc is such a terrific writer," Moses told Cult Times. "I've always had a great relationship with him, so I knew I would be reading for something special. I did a scene with my on-screen son Cody Kasch (Zach Young), which went very well. After that I met with the studio, then the people at ABC, and not long after that I was at work on the set."
Moses recalled the positive mood on set when the show began. "There was a great deal of excitement when we filmed the show's pilot episode because everyone loved the script," he said. "I mean, we'd read a scene and couldn't wait to do it because the dialog was just so well-written. Sometimes a script will turn out good because the director has a plan that pulls it all together and makes it work. In this instance, everything we needed was already there on the page. Our only concern was making sure we got everything right."
A lot has unfolded for Paul Young over the season, and Moses said he hopes viewers at least understand why Wisteria Lane's resident murderer does what he does. "While viewers likely disapprove of what Paul has done so far, they can probably understand where his motivation is coming from. At least, I hope so. I really like the direction in which they're taking my character. Marc Cherry has written some very challenging material for me."
