finale - and to share some spoilers and hopes for the show's future.
"It's been a year of overwhelming fun, excitement, unending photo shoots, interviews and publicity appearances," Eva Longoria (Gabrielle Solis) told William Keck at USA Today. Her character will finish the season pregnant, with her husband Carlos going to jail, and her boyfriend John Rowland possibly the father of her unborn child. "I hope she finds happiness," Longoria said, "but I don't know about this pregnancy. I hate the thought of pregnancy pads. I've done it before when I was pregnant on The Young and the Restless, and it's uncomfortable. I'm not looking forward to wearing a fake stomach and ugly clothes."
Other stories viewers will get to see in the episodes leading up to the final episode include the final revelation of what led Mary-Alice Young to shoot herself in the season debut, the introduction of new housewife Alfre Woodard (Betty Applewhite), and loads of grief for the Desperate Husbands. USA Today reported that only James Denton (Mike Delfino) seems certain to return, but all the other characters come into serious jeopardy. Rex Van De Kamp's serious heart condition won't be helped when he inadvertently starts taking pills made of nothing more but sugar, Paul Young will finally face the music for killing Martha Huber, and a dark secret involving Tom Scavo will threaten his marriage to Lynette. Ricardo Chavira (Carlos Solis) and Jesse Metcalfe (John Rowland) should worry, too, as the writers are already making plans for a new love interest for Gabrielle.
"It's very tenuous existences for all of us," Denton said. "Nobody wants to be the guy left behind, but I don't see how we could all be back."
Next year, many of the show's female characters will be going through major changes as well, according to DH creator Marc Cherry said. "I want to keep finding new ways to talk about issues that relate to everyday women. Lynette will have a job next season [returning to her advertising roots], so I want to address how difficult it is to go to work all day and then come home and be expected to also take care of your house." Cherry also provided some new insight into the Applewhite family. "[They] come on the street; they seem like nice people — but they've got a secret. And it's pretty gothic. It's real and human and awful all at the same time."
Before next season comes along, the DH stars will first have a chance to rest from their chaotic first season. Originally ABC had planned to send most of the cast on an extended promotional tour to Europe, but this has now been downsized to a few appearances in England and Italy. "There's a little bit of looking forward to having some time for a life," Marcia Cross (Bree Van De Kamp) said.
After the summer break, it will be full steam ahead into the show's future, which Cherry said he hoped would take the show to an eventual total of seven seasons. "My goal would be to always have the four women stay with the show until the very end, and follow their journeys much in the way Sex and the City or Golden Girls did. [...] But I'm also cognizant that at any point, one of these women could say, 'I want to go home and be with my kids,' or 'I want to go off and be a movie star.' "
But according to Teri Hatcher (Susan Mayer), the real worry shouldn't be that one of the actresses might leave, as they're all signed up for at least five or six years. Rather, she was worried about viewers getting bored with the show. "I don't feel this is going to go seven years," she said. "Television shows are delicate things, and no matter how big of a hit you have, you never know when it could fall."
In order to determine whether next season will be a turn-off, or whether it will be worth sticking around for, head over to the full USA Today article, which has many more thoughts from the lead actors and actresses on this and the next season. The paper also has a short separate article in which the four main Housewives, along with Nicolette Sheridan (Edie Britt), Denton and Metcalfe talk about their hopes for next year.
