Jesse Metcalfe (John Rowland) said in an interview to mark a visit to Australia that his departure from the show was dictated by storyline changes for Gabrielle Solis, rather than his own character.
"They don't want the character of Gabrielle to be enthralled by this affair," he explained to 7news, "and although people enjoyed the story I think they were wanting to go in a different direction with her character. So I just took a break."
Metcalfe has now finished filming on John Tucker Must Die, an experience that Metcalfe said he enjoyed. "I am the lead in my first feature and I had the best time," he said. But as his character in the movie is that of womanizer with questionable morales—much like his character in Desperate Housewives—he said he wants to try something more different next time. "It does seem that I do get cast in those roles. I definitely want my next project to be a departure from this area."
Metcalfe is in Australia with a "buddy" to promote the Desperate and Dateless ball, but said he wasn't looking for love himself. "You just never know," he said. "While I am here though I am not looking for love, but I am definitely looking to have a good time. You just never know." He added that he looked forward to having the opportunity to "connect" with his fans.
