It's old news now that season two fell out of favor with many critics and fans, but Marc Cherry has said any drop in quality was because he exhausted and he then got bogged down with rewriting scripts rather than guiding the show. But now he's feeling reinvigorated, and is ready to steer the show once more.
Unemployed for a number of years before Housewives launched, and then having to deal with being the creator of the biggest new show on television, Cherry admitted that "season one was a tidal wave" to the Associated Press. "The success, the ratings, the attention, the workload. By the time I finished the season, I was intellectually, morally and spiritually spent—not to mention physically." Then, during the second season, he said he had to scramble to produce more episodes after ABC ordered them and that he ended up rewriting stories written by others. This, he said, causes the show to lose "a large sense of its identity because I wasn't driving the train."
But the show, which still finished the season #4 in the ratings, received overly-harsh criticism said Cherry. "The biggest failure of season two was a lack of consistency. It's not like every episode sucked. ... I'm immensely proud of some of the stuff we did." But he realizes he still has hard work ahead of him now the show has been on air for two years. "I will never have the element of surprise again. Now I just have to work consistently, doing good storytelling with richly detailed characters and interesting twists and turns and surprises."
He is also not ashamed to admit he's still learning. "I feel like I really just started out learning how to write," he said. "I really know a lot about dramatic structure and how to paint characters. ... now I would love the time to really dig deep and do something great." And season three is where it begins. He said the theme of rain in the season premiere was a case of "let's just wipe everything clean and start fresh." Discuss this news item at Talk Desperate!
