By Antony June 5, 2005 - 10:22 PMHello World! I watched a film called Bubba Ho-tep a couple of days ago. Here's how IMDb describes it:
Based on the Bram Stoker Award nominee short story by cult author Joe R. Lansdale, Bubba Ho-tep tells the "true" story of what really did become of Elvis Presley. We find Elvis (Bruce Campbell) as an elderly resident in an East Texas rest home, who switched identities with an Elvis impersonator years before his "death", then missed his chance to switch back. Elvis teams up with Jack (Ossie Davis), a fellow nursing home resident who thinks that he is actually President John F. Kennedy, and the two valiant old codgers sally forth to battle an evil Egyptian entity who has chosen their long-term care facility as his happy hunting grounds.
It sounds corny, and it was. Good B-movie fun. And anyone who has seen a Bruce Campbell film will know what sort of thing they'll be watching.
But as well as being funny and having a great soundtrack, I found the film genuinely quite touching. I never thought I'd buy into a character like Elvis in a rest home, but rather than mocking him it was actually a strong tale of dignity in old age (although there was some mocking too).
If just all films were this good. I'd suggest checking it out if you can. But it is often daft, so if you haven't got a strange sense of humor you probably wouldn't like it... Talk Desperate! threads Below are some of the topics currently being discussed at Talk Desperate!:
