Desperate Housewives executive producer Michael Edelstein spoke recently about a change that was made to the show due to Pope John Paul II's failing health and subsequent death.
In the funeral scene in "There Won't Be Trumpets", Bree Van De Kamp was originally going to say: "You have to hand it to the Catholics, they do grief better than anyone." However with the Pope nearing death, ABC requested a change to the line two days before airing reported New York Daily News.
"We got a phone call from ABC Friday evening asking about the line," said Edelstein. "In light of world events, we felt we should be more sensitive. We were happy to go in and make a last-second fix."
As there was no time to bring Marcia Cross back to the studio to dub the line, they took another line of her saying "Gabby and Carlos" and used that in place of the word Catholic. Observant viewers will notice that the actress still mouths Catholic at this point in the episode.
Edelstein said he felt the change was the right thing to do. "These were extraordinary circumstances. This is about respect for an individual, in respect for a religion."
