Is Edie one of the core housewives, or isn't she? It's something that many have puzzled over, but the answer—at least initially—was most certainly no, revealed creator Marc Cherry. But ABC is demanding more of Nicolette Sheridan's man-hungry Edie Britt this November.
"[Edie] is a gal that's a little more vulnerable than people think," Cherry told Reuters via MSNBC). "She's a woman who's in her sexual prime who's ready to let folks know about it ... but it's her relationship with other women that makes her not so confident." But, it wasn't his intention to have her as a regular character. "I had to cast someone who was sexy and gorgeous that would make Susan feel uncomfortable. I never intended for Edie Britt to be one of the regular characters."
But that soon changed. ABC was a key instigator in getting Sheridan more airtime, as executives insisted that she be given more scenes "albeit subordinate to the four starring housewives". And now, with sweeps kicking off (the time when US TV networks try to up their ratings as they set their advertising rates) the network is requesting even more Edie.
As well as an appearance from Edie's son, expect troubles in her relationship with Susan's ex-husband Karl. "There will be a huge crack in the relationship between Karl and Edie that has direct implications for Susan," Cherry said. "For all her bravado there is a lifetime of hurt. That's something we are going to reveal very slowly and something that Nicolette is great at playing."
One person who is more than happy to have more of Edie on the show is Teri Hatcher (Susan Mayer) who praised her on-screen enemy. "Without her I would not be as good or as funny," said Hatcher.
