Online reviewers have weighed in on the latest Desperate Housewives.

Here's what they had to say about "It Wasn't Meant to Happen":

  • Annie Barrett at EW.com said that Housewives was "hit or miss" for her, but last night was definitely a hit:

From the moment Karl shot the camera that cheeky grin on his way out of Edie's bedroom, I was so down with this episode. Never mind that Bree still insisted on associating with a psycho, or that Eva Longoria would have been only a trifle more obvious about her plea for an Emmy nomination if she had held up a sign that said, 'Check it out — I'm acting! Also, you should care about my baby even though I didn't until I realized she could help me get the most out of yoga.' It's probably better that Eva went with the tears and shrieking. And I'll admit it: Whether it was her performance or the horrific idea of Stripper getting her baby back because she and Frank were 'gonna give the whole family thing a shot,' I was bawling at that closing scene.

You can read her full analysis over at EW.com.

  • But Dave Anderson at TV Guide Online wasn't moved to tears, and had no time for Gabrielle's. story "I'm sorry, but watching Gabrielle be moved to tears as her new baby was being taken away from her and given to the birth parents didn't make me sad. She's been so egotistical, unlovable and selfish that hearing her scream 'We've already fallen in love with her!' just made me think 'Beeyotch, you can just buy another baby.' Oh, yes I did. If Gabrielle were a kind and loving character, I would've totally been sympathetic and would've cried along with her, but as it stands, there's no 'sym,' just 'pathetic.'"

  • Keith McDuffee at TV Squad said the episode's Solis story "was surprisingly heartbreaking for a couple who aren't typically in such a situation" and was that it was one of the best episodes of the season. "I'm not completely up on adoption laws in this country, but this is exactly the sort of thing I'd feared once in my own past. To fall in love with a child, only to have it stripped from you, and there's nothing you can do about it. I sometimes wonder if this is why some people choose to adopt from overseas rather than wrestle with such issues here in the States."

  • There is also brief recap at Television Without Pity, where visitors have so far rated the episode B in a poll.
