Felicity Huffman (Lynette Scavo) spoke to a women's website recently about the difficulties of being a mother, and talked about a pillow she created to ease the burden of being a mother.
"When the babies are little—the first six months, the first year—it all lands on the mom," she told iVillage, which interviewed Huffman as part of its 'Star Mom' series. "When you're pregnant, you're pregnant together. It's you and your husband, and it's this wonderful thing you're going through. But then the baby comes and it wants to be in your arms, nursing all the time. The beginning of motherhood was very lonely, bewildering and exhausting. My husband was involved and just great, but as they say in sports, you're the one climbing lead."
Lynette has now been a housewife and an office worker, but Huffman said that being a housewife is the harder job. "I've been both, and, for me, [as a working mom] you have to contend with the guilt and the feeling you're always short-changing someone," she said. "It's emotional. There are pros and cons of each. But you go to work, you have coffee, you get to have real conversations. There's room and air when you're at work. Even the drive to work can be a vacation! I think staying at home is one of the hardest jobs in the world. And single moms? I don't know how single moms do it. That's the hardest job."
While some actresses have fragrances and cosmetics that carry their name, Huffman now has a pillow on sale at Bath, Bed and Beyond. She said the inspiration for the product came about after the birth of her first child. "I created it a long time ago—about six months after my youngest daughter was born," she said. "I didn't really know what I was doing, so a friend offered to help. I found the pillow so useful and needed, so I hope other moms will too. My husband loves them, and we have them all over the house now—in the living room, the TV room, all over the bed. When I flew to London recently, it was the best thing ever."
