By Antony April 3, 2005 - 4:24 PMHello World! A couple of site columns ago I talked about the so-called "BBC News" site hysteria over the new Doctor Who. So it's with massive amusement that I read how the Doctor, Christopher Eccleston, has quit already as he doesn't want to be "typecast."
To Americans in particular, I bet this is amusing. Because you get actors like George Clooney who do seasons of a show, then have a great career beyond that one show in a variety of roles. Admittedly I'm picking one good example there, instead of the likes of Matthew Perry. But the fact is that actors still make a go of it on US TV normally. But no, 13 episodes filmed (and only one aired) and this actor is bailing already. Such things happen with UK TV, but not that I really believe he's leaving over being typecast—he probably just saw the show.
Having seen two episodes now, I can't believe how poor it is. They could have had something good if they'd retrofitted the show ala Battlestar Galactica. But as it is, it's a tame, second-rate sci-fi show which occasionally looks as if it wants to be a kids' version of Farscape.
Quite honestly I'm sure the BBC could spend the money better on other things. After a report that slammed the BBC for mis-reporting news on the Iraq war, it is now shedding thousands upon thousands of jobs like an upset teenager that has turned to self-multilation with razor blades.
For now though, it's business as usually at the BBC News website with plenty of Doctor Who coverage, and some options to "have your say" where anything negative will be filtered out in favour of some Tony Blair bashing (in a Doctor Who topic no less, they get quite crafty at ways to publish it).
But I'd rather see money spent on cheaper, better entertainment (BBC Four is a great channel, so more like that) and maybe save some jobs at the BBC. For my sci-fi needs, I'll stick to American TV where it's done better and the actors don't tend to leave after one episode.
