By Antony October 2, 2005 - 11:19 PMHello World! So, Desperate Housewives is back. Here are a few brief thoughts I had about "Next" (SPOILERS!):
I can only describe Desperate Housewives as a frothy dessert, I enjoy watching it but I come away feeling a bit empty. But, while I am watching it, it's as fun as ever!
Bree stole the show, of course. All her scenes just shine. Marcia Cross can make anything good, and she is a utter delight to watch. The tie scene was just brilliant, with the obsessive attention to detail and won't-be-beaten act of it all, but then also warmness of her saying "You look magnificent". I almost wish she won the Emmy, but then I think Felicity Huffman is great too and deserved it in a totally different way. Why couldn't they allow two Emmys to be given in this category?
At times though, the episode felt contrived:
- Playing on the "mystery in the cellar" so bluntly was a little too much too soon. If they're not careful it'll just look very formulaic: "unveil mystery in season premiere, wrap up mystery in season finale".
- The "death" of Zach was laughably bad, and turned out to be a trick. And why on earth did they think it was Zach? This was never explained. (There was also a very odd line of dialogue from Susan: "He had a gun in my face for six hours, I know what he looks like"—when I'd have thought knowing him for years as a neighbor would be the reason.)
- Lynette having to take the baby to an interview (wow, what a surprise... not) and then getting a job because she said "win some awards" and "improve your website". Those are a high-flying business woman's job-winning ideas?
Plus some of the scenes felt they were strung together in an odd fashion, for example you have Tom unable to stand up then a couple of scenes later in the church right as rain.
But although I'm saying all this, I did enjoy it. I find Desperate Housewives is best without any deep analysis.
Sit back and enjoy it, that's the best way to go! Talk Desperate! threads After watching tonight's episode, head over to Talk Desperate! to discuss the events from the episode! Poll Results Below are the results of the most recent Get Desperate! poll:
