It's not the Desperate Housewives spin-off ABC may have been hoping for, but it looks like the Alphabet will be able to add a second show by DH creator Marc Cherry to its line-up next year.
According to a report in trade paper Variety, Cherry has agreed to join horror writer Don Mancini to develop the murder mystery show Kill/Switch. The show revolves around a woman who was executed for killing her daughter's murderer, but then finds herself still on Earth, inhabiting the body of someone about to be killed. It's her job to prevent this from happening -- after which she'll be transported to yet another person's body.
Cherry will supervise and help Mancini, who's writing the pilot but has very limited television experience. "I've been turning down offers from other writers right and left because I'm so swamped, but his idea was so strong," Cherry told the Hollywood Reporter. "Instead of a whodunit, it's a who-will-do-it."
According to Mancini, he approached Cherry because he felt there were similarities between Kill/Switch and Desperate Housewives. "It seemed like the fact that it dealt with suspense and melodrama -- and the tone isn't exactly like Desperate Housewives, but it has humor and wit in it -- seemed like something in his wheelhouse," he told the Hollywood Reporter, while adding in an interview with Variety that there will also be an "overarching thematic thread" throughout the season.
And as for that DH spin-off? Don't hold your breath for it -- Variety revealed that Cherry had been considering one, called Vicious Cheerleaders, but that for now those plans have been put on the backburner.
